How NWSA uses eeSea data: to incentivize on-time carrier performance

The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) has launched an innovative incentive program to enhance the reliability of their container movements, and improve service delivery into Seattle and Tacoma ports. With eeSea’s comprehensive and unbiased data analytics, NWSA can effectively track, manage, and reward carrier performance, thereby boosting operational efficiency and service reliability.

NWSA’s Voyage Consistency & On-Time Arrival Award Program is designed to incentivize ocean carriers to maintain consistent and reliable voyage schedules. With a $1 million reward pool, the program offers monetary awards to the top three ocean services that meet stringent performance criteria, including:

  • No more than 4 blank sailings for weekly services (2 for fortnightly services)

  • Average delay within 24 hours versus proforma ETA over a 52-week period (NWSA week 18 2024 through week 17 2025)

  • Performance Metrics and Rewards:

    • 1st place: $500,000

    • 2nd place: $300,000

    • 3rd place: $200,000

NWSA integrates eeSea data into their performance tracking system to monitor key metrics such as on-time arrivals and delays. The data enables:

  • Tracking and analysis: always updated data on carrier performance, allowing NWSA to monitor schedule adherence and identify trends.

  • Performance management: detailed analytics enabling NWSA to manage carrier performance and ensure that the incentive program is data-driven and transparent.

  • Incentive allocation: based on the tracked data, NWSA rewards the top-performing carriers, promoting operational excellence and reliability.

The intention is that the incentive program will motivate carriers to maintain schedules, resulting in enhanced port efficiency and service delivery. This both rewards top-performing carriers and demonstrates NWSA’s commitment to maximizing efficiency and shared gains for all stakeholders.

Since the implementation, NWSA has been able to observe developments in carrier schedule reliability. While it is still early days, it is already possible to see positive differences, and the potential to influence them further.

John Tullis, NWSA: “When container ships arrive consistently and on-time, cargo fluidity and capacity improve. This reliability benefits exporters, importers, truckers, and rail planners alike. I’m thrilled that I get to help launch our Voyage Consistency & On-Time Arrival Award program, recognizing top-performing ocean services at The Northwest Seaport Alliance. Partnering with eeSea gives us unbiased, quality data, essential for maintaining high standards and rewarding real carrier performance.”
