eeSea in action: Port of New Orleans uses data for business growth

Background

Since becoming an eeSea customer in 2023, the commercial team at the Port of New Orleans has been using our platform to enhance their strategic decision-making processes. One notable case this past spring was when the Port prepared for meetings with its ocean carrier clients’ HQ offices.

The Challenge

Ahead of these meetings, the port sought to analyze their current services and strengthen their proposals for new targeted routes. They turned to eeSea for support, with the aim to refine their pitch with data-driven insights.

Our Approach

We collaborated closely with the port’s business intelligence manager to generate a thorough analysis for each carrier meeting. We split the outputs into key topics that included:

  • Current service analysis - which services currently call at the Port of New Orleans and how can we assure their continuation?

  • Future service opportunities - what new services could be attracted and what would it take to bring them to New Orleans? Should they propose adding New Orleans to an existing route or replacing a current port call?

  • Targeted country analysis - for a specific country of interest, which existing services could be targeted and what would be required to add New Orleans as a port of call?

Data-Driven Insights

With eeSea’s service overviews, we provided data on:

  • Capacity and performance - we analyzed proforma and actual port stays, as well as distance, time, and speed requirements to adjacent ports.

  • Speed and distance considerations - we evaluated whether there was enough schedule buffer to add a New Orleans call or if schedule adjustments could improve reliability.

  • Schedule reliability - by comparing the latest service versions with historical data, we highlighted opportunities to enhance schedule reliability when maintaining or adding New Orleans in their rotations.

  • Berth performance - leveraging our unbiased historical data, we demonstrated New Orleans’ strong track record in working vessels on proforma, including identifying where faster port stays were able to contribute to schedule recoveries.

The Outcome

Combining eeSea’s insights with the Port of New Orleans’ expertise, the team developed compelling analysis to present at their carrier meetings. Several carriers even expressed they were impressed by the data, both for the Port of New Orleans and on the global scope.

“eeSea’s data provided the actionable intelligence we needed to engage in meaningful discussions with our carrier partners. Their support helped us present a clearer operational case for continued and expanded services at the Port of New Orleans.”
